Vikings on a mission flick HAMMER OF THE GODS is showing at FrightFest at the end of August.
My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/hammer-of-the-gods.html FROM UP ON POPPY HILL ★★★☆☆ is out in the UK on Friday.
My take on it: http://www.filmaluation.com/from-up-on-poppy-hill.html Over 30 years after its Cannes debut, domestic-drama horror mash-up POSSESSION is getting a re-release on Blu-ray and DVD in its 124 minute version, on Monday.
My take on it: http://www.filmaluation.com/possession.html BLACKFISH ★★★☆☆ Focused in its ire at killer whale exploitation; but needed to go wider and deeper as to public/governmental responsibility.
Out in the UK on Friday. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/blackfish.html For screening and further information: http://blackfishmovie.com By Hemanth Kissoon
Five nuggets gleaned from THE LONE RANGER press conference: 1. Johnny Depp said that the film was trying to show what crimes were being committed towards Native Americans as progress moved westward, and flipping the cliché of savages. 2. Depp said his greatest inspiration was Marlon Brando, who was probably the greatest influence of actors from 1948 onwards. 3. On PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN, Depp said they were so close to firing him they could taste it. He told an executive they could, but would have to pay him for his time. 4. Depp stated Tonto had to be taken seriously as a warrior. He couldn’t turn up skinny. 5. The executive producer credit was a beautiful gesture from producer Jerry Bruckheimer, said Depp. They were all in it from the very beginning. Bruckheimer added that Johnny brings so much creativity to the process, putting layers onto script and story. The production design and visual effects appear to have been really stepped up. Out November 22nd. Here's the trailer for THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE: By Hemanth Kissoon
Five nuggets gleaned from the RED 2 press conference: 1. Helen Mirren thought it’d be funnier to be Queen Elizabeth I rather than the current monarch. The writers thought it’d be hilarious for her to play the Queen of England. 2. Bruce Willis was not a comic book guy as a child; he spent most of the time outside. 3. When asked about singing roles, Willis says he shouts in key, rather than sings. 4. When Mirren was offered the part in the original RED, she was initially worried people would think she had sold out; but then realised how stupid that thought was. 5. Willis prefers to make people laugh rather than fight people on screen. “I want to show you something. From the time of Alexander the Great, no man could travel faster than the horse that carried him. Not anymore. Imagine: Time and space, under the mastery of man, power that makes emperors and kings look like fools. Whoever controls this, controls the future,” Latham Cole (Tom Wilkinson)
THE LONE RANGER ★★★★☆ Capitalism/imperialism/genocide weaved into a subversive, loopy summer blockbuster. Unafraid to deliver bitter blows. Out in the UK 9th August, and out in North America now. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/the-lone-ranger.html Brilliant Indian actor Irrfan Khan (LIFE OF PI, SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, THE DARJEELING LIMITED) talking about his career yesterday; interviewed by the director of THE WARRIOR, Asif Kapadia.

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
