GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 ★★½☆☆
D: James Gunn (Super, Slither). S: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel. Bloated. A dreary cacophony of noisy, bland effects. Humour and charisma makes watchable. I found NOTORIOUS and STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON to hagiographic. Will this be more incisive? BRIGHT NIGHTS (Helle Nächte) ★★☆☆☆
D: Thomas Arslan (Gold). S: Georg Friedrich, Tristan Göbel, Marie Leuenberger, Hanna Karlberg. So much narrative and character space left empty of profundity. With this and GOLD, director Thomas Arslan underwhelms as a filmmaker. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/bright-nights.html FÉLICITÉ ★★★½☆
D: Alain Gomis (Aujourd’hui). S: Véro Tshanda Beya, Gaetan Claudia, Papi Mpaka. Depiction of lack of social safety nets is softened by an ace soundtrack and unsentimental character bonding. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/felicite.html Out to own today: Catfight
Salt and Fire
THE TRANSFIGURATION ★★★★★
D: Michael O’Shea S: Eric Ruffin, Chloe Levine, Aaron Moten. I am so impressed. The best horror film of 2017 so far. A teenager is a serial killer, who also may or may not be a vampire, because of post-traumatic stress. Class and race are thrown in, and a substandard social care system. |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
