AUTUMN AT THE MULTIPLEXES
10 October 2010
It is that time of the year: awards season, Halloween and Christmas; which hopefully means a variety of spectacle and real quality. Here are my Top 5 most anticipated movies of the next three months....
5. Due Date
If a patron saint of movie justice existed, Robert Downey Jr. would prove his existence. Brilliant comedy timing pre-dated the Iron Mans, and can be seen in Wonder Boys. Here he teams up with The Hangover’s director (Todd Phillips) and star (Zach Galifianakis) in a film that looks like a buddy road movie along the lines of 80s pop culture classic Planes, Trains and Automobiles; where a man has got to cross America for the birth of his child.
4. The Green Hornet
Director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Science of Sleep) finally given a big budget. Be Kind Rewind and his documentary (The Thorn in the Heart) may have been disappointing, but I still have faith in the man. Action, comedy and innovation should be on the menu in a take on masked crime stoppers.
3. Jackass 3D
I’m still not sold on 3D, but if you’re going to make and watch a film with visual depth (as opposed to any other kind), then this has got to be it. The advert looks like more of the same, you know, a guy being kicked in the nuts by a donkey, being hit in the face/body by a five foot hand, a jet-ski going though a hedge, etc. I’m sure their mums are proud.
2. The Social Network
You don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies. Great tagline for the poster. There are two people behind the camera that should have all cinema-goers excited: director David Fincher (Se7en, Fight Club) and writer Aaron Sorkin (The West Wing, Charlie Wilson’s War). Err, hello! Awesome! Facebook has become a phenomenon. Here’s a look at the origins of social networking. Ambitious and relevant.
1. Tron: Legacy
Have you seen the visual effects and production design on this? No? W.T.F. are you doing emmer effer? You’re nearly at the end of this piece. Yep. Nearly. Go now and watch the trailer. I don’t need to say anymore.
