“Screw this hippy crap!” Cartman
For those as right-wing as South Park’s Eric Cartman, they might be worried about the recent spate of left-leaning films highlighting the cowardice and avarice of the world’s governments, multi-nationals and individuals, from the indie movie (SYRIANA), to the blockbuster (THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW), and the documentary (SUPER SIZE ME).
According to the purposefully and logically argued WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR? we are all responsible for our use of petrol-guzzling automobiles. But the real power lies in the hands of government to legislate and exert pressure to promote technology and shift cultural norms, and the courts in David and Goliath situations; but more worryingly are the unelected unaccountable global-spanning corporations. They play on the greed and fear of politicians and play them like a John Frusciante solo, and tie-down their opponents with spirit/financial crushing lawsuits. However, often the politician and big business are one and the same – being high up on the board of directors. The focus is why a working electric car launched in California in 1996 was not only not capitalized upon but terminated.
The EV1 was built by General Motors and leased to the public, including Hollywood celebs to raise awareness. Like in ROGER & ME, Michael Moore’s 1989 documentary, GM turn out to be the baddies, but here they are not the only ones. Emotive and focused, this film will leave you angered at what might have been but optimistic at the state of technology for future developments.
