MY TOP 40 FAVOURITE FILMS OF 2022
40. BODIES BODIES BODIES
An ace slasher horror-comedy. The movie goes from passive-aggressive to aggressive-aggressive. All while being bitingly funny. [To read my full review, click here.] |
38. KLOKKENLUIDER
Actor Neil Maskell's feature debut as writer-director reminds of SEXY BEAST and IN BRUGES. The conversations have humour and an acidic edge. KLOKKENLUIDER has no obvious catharsis, but perhaps the cynicism acknowledged is the catharsis? [To read my full review, click here.] |
34. UNICORN WARS
A Spanish animated movie about teddy bears fighting unicorns. It starts as uproarious as TEAM AMERICA but gradually gets so bleak, and becomes an allegory for the ages. Be warned, there is full frontal teddy bear nudity (once seen, it cannot be unseen!). [To read my full review, click here.] |
32. THE NORTHMAN
A Viking vengeance flick opting for world-building over catharsis. Violence and pessimism over reassurance. A thumping soundtrack. Visually arresting. The ruthlessness is shocking. [To read my full review, click here.] |
28. BONES AND ALL
A skilful, unusual cinema experience. A film that is both romantic and vomit-inducing. Emotional yet chilling. A cannibal love story road movie. Mark Rylance delivers one of the most unnerving performances I have ever seen. One of the best horror movies of 2022. [To read my full review, click here.] |
16. WEIRD: THE AL YANKOVIC STORY
A hilarious comedy biopic spoof, skewering in particular the slew of movie music biogs. Wall-to-wall cameos. It has the relentless energy of an action movie. [To read my full review, click here.] |
15. TRIANGLE OF SADNESS
A scathingly hilarious commentary on the multi-millionaire/billionaire class, among observations on race, gender, attractiveness, etc. [To read my full review, click here.] |
6. PREY
A Predator movie set 300 years ago in the Comanche Nation. Part THE REVENANT, part PREDATOR. There’s even a Comanche dubbed version on Disney+. |
5. FAST & FEEL LOVE
A laugh-out-loud metafiction-sports-comedy involving competitive cup stacking. (Though, it's really about being a sh*t boyfriend.) [To read my full review, click here.] |
2. MEDUSA DELUXE
A murder-mystery, set at a regional hairdressing competition, made to look like most of the story unfolds in a single take, who is not up for that?! The enjoyment of MEDUSA DELUXE is manyfold: Technical prowess, dialogue, performances, and narrative handling. The monologues and conversations are as intricate as the camerawork.
