A friend once said I should review porn under a separate name, ‘Film Adult Nation’. How prophetic. Only joshing! I’m not about to go down that route. (What’s the point? And it’s not particularly classy!) However, this is getting a cinema release, and I felt it’s my duty to check it out and let you know. A 3D “erotic” movie has a novelty value and a giggle factor if done right. This was not done right. SEX AND ZEN has neither the frisson of IN THE REALM OF THE SENSES (1976), nor a cheeky sense of humour, nor a harmless charm. Instead it went for silly and then, weirdly and disturbingly, to violence and torture. From the very kitsch to the offensive; or for others, the offensive to the very offensive. There were regular titters through about the first two thirds, at various things utilising the gimmicky nature of the third dimension, and some of the brash jokes.

As with other porn films (I hear!), there is not much story. A couple get married. He can’t please her. He goes to a brothel, which then turns nasty. The end. 118 minutes later. There was no need for almost two hours of this. For anyone wondering, it is very much softcore, except for the violence – limbs being chopped off, and misery and humiliation being heaped on the leads. Why this story for the 3D intro to the genre? Couldn’t anything else have been found?
This may seem a chaste review, but it’s one thing to see XXXXXXXXXXXXXX and XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, but quite another to write about it. Also, if I was you I’d be probably be too curious to care what anyone has written and see for myself. But don’t. Seriously. I warned you...
