“You are really annoying,” Lady Doronjo to Ai.
That quote sums up the whole film. YATTERMAN is almost indescribably bad, though I’m going to have a go nonetheless. It’s hard to believe this is from Takashi Miike, whose previous two UK releases were knocked out of the park spectacularly: 13 ASSASSINS and HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI. Based on the 70s manga TV show, we are in an alternate reality where places around the globe are spelled: Tokyoyo, Narway and Ogypt. Not sure why. Maybe the filmmakers thought the narrative was not irritating enough? The tone and presentation make me query who this is aimed at. YATTERMAN has the hyperactivity, inanity and soul-destroying narrative facileness of POWER RANGERS, yet it is riddled with dubious sexual politics, not even innuendo.
Team Yatterman, made up of Gan Takada, Ai Kaminari and two robots, are secret crime fighters who suit up every Saturday to fight the Doronjo Gang at 6.30pm. The opening melee is a headache of noise, images and shoddy CGI. The weekly showdown is broken up here with the desire by baddie Lady Doronjo to find the pieces of the Skull Stone (an ancient artefact which is said to grant a miracle when unified). She is working for Skullobey, the God of Thieves. YATTERMAN is repetitive battles, where each part, tied to recovering a piece, is staged a little differently. Tortuous stuff. There’s a vague commentary on consumerism, but not delved into with any kind of interest, instead we get dialogue like “You Imbefool”. Puerile and depressingly awful for nearly two hours.
