“I have to warn you, I think I’m a very strong puncher.” OKJA ★★★½☆
D: Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer, Mother, The Host, ,Memories of Murder, Barking Dogs Never Bite). S: Tilda Swinton, Paul Dano, Ahn Seo-Hyun, Lily Collins, Steven Yuen, Giancarlo Esposito, Shirley Henderson, Jake Gyllenhaal. Not in the same league as SNOWPIERCER (but then what is?!). Ambitious, but needed to be morally grey. Director Bong Joon-ho continues to skilfully marry thrills with social commentary. UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT [season 3] ★★★★☆
Picks up the baton fumbled by COMMUNITY. The rate of gags is amazing. Kimmy and Titus are A1 character creations. A GHOST STORY ★★★★½
D: David Lowery (Pete’s Dragon, Ain’t Them Bodies Saints). S: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara, Will Oldham, Sonia Acevedo, Rob Zabrecky, Liz Franke, Kesha. Eerie rather than scary. Transcendentally epic. A film that gets better and better as it proceeds. Director David Lowery surpasses Terrence Malick’s THE TREE OF LIFE. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/a-ghost-story.html Out to own today: The Autopsy of Jane Doe
SHIMMER LAKE ★★★★☆
D: Oren Uziel. S: Rainn Wilson, Stephanie Sigman, Benjamin Walker, Wyatt Russell, Ron Livingston, John Michael Higgins, Rob Corddry. A dark humoured thriller told backwards. Violent and quirky. Even the minor characters are distinctive. WEIRDOS ★★☆☆☆
D: Bruce McDonald (Helions, Pontypool). S: Dylan Authors, Julia Sarah Stone, Allan Hawco, Cathy Jones, V. Tang, Rhys Bevan-John, Molly Parker. Unfortunate comparisons are made to Wes Anderson’s wonderful THE DARJEELING LIMITED. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/weirdos.html |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
