(The floating exploding goat!) Efficient characterisation. The bonkers climax. Love this movie.   THE PLATFORM ★★★½☆ D: Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia. S: Ivan Massagué, Zorion Eguileor, Antonia San Juan, Eric Goode, Alexandra Masangkay. Sci-fi horror about inequality is the parable for our times. A lean structure, plot and design-wise. The ending is perhaps too allegorical, but debating it will help keep the film in the mind.   MOSAIC [mini-series] ★★★★★ A whodunnit that slowly builds into something utterly compelling. Tragic and bleak in the vein of CHINATOWN [1974] or SHANGHAI [2012]. Little balm is offered, bar the fact that a story like this exists. Director Steven Soderbergh really is a master.   SAMURAI MARATHON ★★★★★ D: Bernard Rose (Mr Nice, The Kreutzer Sonata, Ivansxtc, Candyman, Chicago Joe and the Showgirl). S: Takeru Satoh, Nana Komatsu, Shôta Sometani, Hiroki Hasegawa, Ryu Kohata, Naoto Takenaka, Joey Iwanaga, Danny Huston. What an original, refreshing take on the genre. Along with the swordplay, the film adds sports, politics and class conflict. The whole experience is artful, enhanced by a beautiful score by composer Philip Glass.   Out to own today: The Truth
ALTERED CARBON [season two] ★★☆☆☆ Annoyingly murky lighting, cheap-looking production design, naff fight choreography. Actor Anthony Mackie is wasted. His normally engaging performance hamstrung by atrocious dialogue. At least there is cast diversity. The virtuosity of the source novels are squandered.
