THE CAPTAIN (Der Hauptmann) ★★★★★
D: Robert Schwentke (Insurgent, R.I.P.D., Red, The Time Traveller’s Wife, Flightplan). S: Max Hubacher, Milan Peschel, Alexander Fehling, Waldemar Kobus, Frederick Lau. Three years in a row Germany has delivered one of the best films of the year. A Nazi deserter kills dozens of other Nazis to survive. Visceral, brutal, allegorical. Expertly crafted. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/the-captain.html KINGS ★★★☆☆
D: Deniz Gamze Ergüven (Mustang). S: Halle Berry, Daniel Craig. A film about the 1992 Los Angeles riots, starring Halle Berry and Daniel Craig, and from the director of MUSTANG, on paper appeared to be a doozy. The end result is disappointing. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/kings.html THE CHILDREN ACT ★☆☆☆☆
D: Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal, Stage Beauty, Iris). S: Emma Thompson, Fionn Whitehead, Ben Chaplin, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Eileen Walsh, Stanley Tucci. Far from a satisfactory examination of existential crises. Richard Eyre is not a good filmmaker at the best of times, but this is tripe. A contender for worst film of the year. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/the-children-act.html Out to own today: Brawl In Cell Block 99
BRIGHT ★★☆☆☆
D: David Ayer (Suicide Squad, Fury, Sabotage, End of Watch, Street Kings, Harsh Times). S: Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace, Jay Hernandez, Margaret Cho, Ike Barinholtz, Edgar Ramírez. ALIEN NATION already kind of did this. A race relations movie for those that voted for Brexit and Trump. Too obvious for everyone else. Some neat production design. Thrill-wise, incoherent universe-building and an inane story. |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
