It has been seven years since SPRING BREAKERS. The latest from director Harmony Korine:
It is producer Megan Ellison’s birthday. Her top 5 films:
- IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
- THE SISTERS BROTHERS
After Soderbergh’s impressive UNSANE, his latest is also shot on a smart phone.
It is actor Christian Bale’s birthday. His top 7* films:
- EMPIRE OF THE SUN
- I’M NOT THERE
- THE BIG SHORT
- THE DARK KNIGHT
- THE FIGHTER
- THE NEW WORLD
(* I couldn’t decide on just 5.)
KINGDOM [season one] ★★★★★
An exhilarating South Korean zombie period epic. Like the best of its genre, the show is filled with contemporary allegory. Made with panache, this is what the WORLD WAR Z adaptation should have strove for.
UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT [seasons 1-4] ★★★★★
I can't believe the show is over. *sob*
A comedy with an endless supply of social commentary wrapped within witty jokes. Rarely has something been so entertainingly critical of bad behaviour with such winsome positivity. Titus and Kimmy are characters for the ages.
Out to own today:
One Cut of the Dead
It is actor Elijah Wood’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND
- I DON’T FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE.
- LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING
- SIN CITY
THE PUNISHER [season two] ★★★★☆
Is this the most brutal thing Marvel has produced? The exciting fight choreography has a wincing crunch. If being a vigilante like Frank Castle makes the character right wing, at least his foes are right wing: Merciless greed, religious hypocrites, fascists, those attempting to subvert democracy, etc. The only superhero television show that holds any interest for me.

The evaluation of a film
Verb, "to filmaluate”:
To evaluate a film
I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note. (That appreciation doesn’t stop me from having high standards though.)
