THE FIRST, THE LAST ★★★☆☆
D: Bouli Lanners. S: Albert Dupontel, Bouli Lanners, Suzanne Clément, Michael Lonsdale, Max von Sydow. Modern western starts akin to 29 PALMS, but then softens. Sweet resolution drains story of potential power. SLACK BAY (Ma Loute) ★★☆☆☆
D: Bruno Dumont (Li’l Quinquin, Camille Claudel 1915, Outside Satan, Hadewijch, Flanders, Twentynine Palms). S: Fabrice Luchini, Juliette Binoche, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. Bruno Dumont seems to have wanted to make a NAPOLEON DYNAMITE-esque comedy. This verges on the cringe, and not in a positive way. Out to own today: War on Everyone
T2 TRAINSPOTTING ★★★☆☆
D: Danny Boyle (Jobs, Trance, 127 Hours, Slumdog Millionaire, Sunshine, Millions, 28 Days Later, A Life Less Ordinary, Trainspotting, Shallow Grave). S: Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle, Ewen Bremner, Jonny Lee Miller, Shirley Henderson, Kelly Macdonald, Anjela Nedyalkova. Not a disaster! But is just a nostalgia trip. Softens the nihilism of still brilliant original, thankfully without ruining it. NORMAN ★★★★½
D: Joseph Cedar (Footnote). S: Richard Gere, Steve Buscemi, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lior Ashkenazi, Michael Sheen, Dan Stevens. Richard Gere shines as an enigmatic, flawed business man. Intimate and on geopolitical levels, the density impresses. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/norman.html STRANGE WEATHER ★★★½☆
D: Katherine Dieckmann. S: Holly Hunter, Carrie Coon, Kim Coates, Glenne Headly. Holly Hunter compels as a mother reassessing her son's suicide. Damns financial inequality. Not quite IN THE BEDROOM. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/strange-weather.html The unreliable narrator is so tired now. After MR ROBOT, why would Rami Malek be interested in this concept again? Taiwanese gangster comedy, with a dark and brutal underpinning. Everyone is hilarious yet with a trigger temper. |
