Eleven things we learned:
- Some people say the best scores you don't notice. He says "fuck you", music is another character.
- Writing is a muscle. The more you exercise it, the leaner, stronger it becomes.
- Emotional content and feeling is really what Mansell is looking for, rather than intellectual decoding.
- John Carpenter is a huge influence. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 is one of his favourite film scores. Carpenter was working in a language he could understand.
- Mansell repurposed Tchaikovsky for BLACK SWAN.
- Philip Glass wrote, in advance, internal pieces for STOKER. Clint sees it was an honour to be involved.
- Mansell's main instrument is the computer, which is the keyboard. Can dial up an orchestra as well as electronic sounds. He plays the guitar, which is his instrument.
- There are a couple of scenes where director Darren Aronofsky is trying to get him to lighten the tone, but that's not Clint's instinct. He hasn't figured out how to score something humorous.
- The Kronos Quartet brought the REQUIEM FOR A DREAM score to life. We have senses, they have another couple, says Mansell. They took the music, and the experience of the music, through the stratosphere. Was incredible to work with musicians that capable.
- Mansell can't explain why people are so connected to his 'Lux Aeterna' piece in REQUIEM FOR A DREAM.
- Find your voice and believe in it, don't worry about it being accepted and popular.
