It is actor Naomi Watts’s birthday. Her top 5 films:
- 21 GRAMS - BIRDMAN - KING KONG - MULHOLLAND DRIVE - WHILE WE’RE YOUNG BORDER (Gräns) ★★★★☆
D: Ali Abbasi (Shelley). S: Eva Melander, Eero Milonoff, Viktor Åkerblom. A very rare cinema occurrence: An uncategorisable film. Continually evolving, it feels like a lot of thought has gone in. Disturbing, as you'd predict from the author of 'Let the Right One In'. BISBEE ’17 [documentary] ★★★½☆ D: Robert Greene (Kate Plays Christine, Actress). A documentary on the rule of law, working conditions, racism, and mass murder. One hundred years later, a town confronts its past. Reminds of THE ACT OF KILLING, but is not in the same league. WOMAN AT WAR (Kona fer í stríð) ★★★★★ D: Benedikt Erlingsson. S: Halldóra Geirharðsdóttir, Jóhann Sigurðarson, Juan Camillo Roman Estrada. A choir mistress/environmental activist takes on Icelandic heavy industry. A film that is both funny and furious, as well as being utterly gripping. THUGS OF HINDOSTAN is one of my most anticipated movies of the Autumn/Winter season. ARCTIC ★★★★☆
D: Joe Penna. S: Mads Mikkelsen, Maria Thelma Smáradóttir. What a survival flick! Mads Mikkelsen was a wise choice of protagonist. Drops you right in immediately. No back story. A polar bear acts like a loaded gun. It is actor Gwyneth Paltrow’s birthday. Her top 5 films:
- CONTAGION - MORTDECAI - SEVEN - SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE - THE TALENTED MR RIPLEY Director Andrew Bujalski ranked, worst ➡️ best:
RESULTS ⬇️ BEESWAX ⬇️ MUTUAL APPRECIATION ⬇️ SUPPORT THE GIRLS ⬇️ FUNNY HA HA ⬇️ COMPUTER CHESS SCHOOL’S OUT ★★★☆☆
D: Sébastien Marnier. S: Luàna Bajrami, Emmanuelle Bercot, Victor Bonnel. Worth the watch for the ending. Overlong and repetitive, but sinister. There are FIGHT CLUB and FIRST REFORMED themes, but the movie is not in the same league. The red herrings are kinda unhelpful. SUPPORT THE GIRLS ★★★½☆ D: Andrew Bujalski (Results, Computer Chess, Beeswax, Mutual Appreciation, Funny Ha Ha). S: Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, Dylan Gelula. Vilifies employer heartlessness and caprice, and the mistreatment of women in the workplace, while (inadvertently?) arguing for a cooperative business model. Feels incomplete though, like a television show end of season finale. THE BREAKER UPPERERS ★★★★☆
Ds: Madeleine Sami, Jackie van Beek. S: Madeleine Sami, Jackie van Beek, James Rolleston. My face is hurting I've been laughing so much. A comedy filled to the rafters with jokes. (One bum note: rom-coms, bromances, please stop using the same narrative device of falling out and getting back together.) AFTER THE SCREAMING STOPS [documentary] ★★★☆☆ ANVIL-esque music doc on 1980s boy band, Bros, but funnier. Egos and pretentiousness are not in short supply. Laughing at Matt Goss here, is it cruel and/or unavoidable? Also, the film feels incomplete. MAY THE DEVIL TAKE YOU ★☆☆☆☆ D: Timo Tjahjanto (Headshot, Killers). S: Chelsea Islan, Pevita Pearce, Ray Sahetapy. Woefully inane hackneyed horror flick. Nothing stands out. So little of it feels original. A big disappointment from one of the directors of the fantastic HEADSHOT. It is actor Michael Douglas’s birthday. His top 5 films:
