I’ve watched about eight Godzilla movies. They are all pretty rubbish. But the theme music is brill! THE TWILIGHT ZONE [season one] ★★★★★
Phenomenal. So tense. After THE OUTSIDER, what a year for horror television! A modern take on the classic show. Stunning production design. Parables on class, gender, race, power, etc., etc. An anthology of stories equivalent to 10 thought-provoking horror movies in one season. ‘Replay’ and ‘Not All Men’ are particular standouts. Narrated and executive produced by maestro Jordan Peele (GET OUT, US). DEVS [mini-series] ★★★★☆
From the director of EX MACHINA, a nightmarish vision of the near future (and present). A tech mystery about grief. Sonoya Mizuno is excellent, her character scrabbling for answers while continually on the verge of being swamped by overwhelming forces. BABYLON BERLIN [season three] ★★★½☆
This season took an age to get going, but the accumulation of emotion and themes is effective and powerful. A murder whodunnit entwined with conspiracy. The parallels between Weimar Germany and the modern world are stark. Charlotte Ritter (Liv Lisa Fries) is still the best character in the show. Two National Theatre productions of FRANKENSTEIN, directed by Danny Boyle, are on YouTube. I made it through 15 minutes of Jonny Lee Miller as the monster. I watched all of the Benedict Cumberbatch take.
(I prefer live theatre to consuming it on a screen. The editing and camera angle choices in FRANKENSTEIN annoy.) THE PLAGUES OF BRESLAU ★★★★☆
D: Patryk Vega. S: Malgorzata Kozuchowska, Daria Widawska, Andrzej Grabowski, Maria Dejmek, Iwona Bielska, Igor Kujawski. I almost turned this off at the beginning. So glad I didn’t. A weirdly funny, ultra-violent, political, serial killer thriller from Poland. Who would’ve guessed the genre would turn out something that could be this much of a blast?! Director Fabrice du Welz’s movies ranked, worst ➡️ best:
MESSAGE FROM THE KING ⬇️ ADORATION ⬇️ ALLÉLUIA ⬇️ CALVAIRE ⬇️ VINYAN ⬇️ COLT 45 WESTWORLD [season three] ★★½☆☆
One of the show’s few remaining strengths is the demonstration of competing agendas. However, caring about them anymore is a struggle. As grandiose as proceedings are, things have gotten too diffuse. I had hoped for SPARTACUS or BLADE RUNNER. Instead, it is THE SOCIAL NETWORK, shorn of its insight. |
