“You were never very predictable,” Dovid (Alessandro Nivola) A compelling lesbian love story set in the Jewish community of North London. DISOBEDIENCE goes further than the difficulties of coming out, it looks at female self-determination and societal repression. The story may on the surface appear culturally specific, however the ideas resonate across communities where religious conformity is expected. Those who have grown up to be tolerant and open-minded, will of course be wanting the lead couple to break free, while also understanding the bonds keeping them shackled. “My body is in revolt,” Louis Dega (Rami Malek) Why a remake now of the 1973 Steve McQueen prison escape flick? Is it because filmmakers have been watching documentaries like Werner Herzog’s INTO THE ABYSS and ON DEATH ROW, and Ava DuVernay’s 13TH? Among many other topics, they talk about the problems of the current prison system: Its use as a modern form of slavery, its privatisation, and how entire communities’ economies are built around the penitentiary business. Recent HBO TV show THE NIGHT OF looks at what incarceration can do to the innocent while awaiting trial. The issue of the inequality of bail has been raised on social media. There is no hiding from god,” Lydia (Jennifer Ehle) At first the absurdity and hypocrisy makes you laugh, then the absurdity and hypocrisy makes you feel pity for the deluded, and then the absurdity and hypocrisy makes the audience despair. The use of organised religion to oppress gay people makes me sick. It is not about goodness or godliness, it is about control. When the power of the immoral is waning, or the immoral strive to acquire power, and the arguments are not convincing to the populace as to why they should have power, minority groups are targeted and scapegoated.
