Lone Survivor
Director-actor Peter Berg is coming off a stinker. One of the worst of 2012. You may have caught it. That’s right, BATTLESHIP. But it is a testament to his character that he dusted himself down and has now delivered a cut above war film. LONE SURVIVOR grows in esteem the more one chews over the presentation. Cuban Fury
Did Nick Frost have a bet with Simon Pegg to see if he could make a comedy more woeful than RUN FATBOY RUN? If so, the jury is out on the winner. Double disappointment comes from a classy cast squandered, coupled with lead Frost off form (contrast his turns in the underrated PAUL and sci-fi spoof sitcom HYPERDRIVE). [To read more, click here.]
Last Vegas
THE HANGOVER has a lot to answer for. The stag-do, wedding movie subgenres have increased significantly. BRIDESMAIDS aside, the quality has not been to the standard that comedies should reach for. LAST VEGAS joins the duff A FEW BEST MEN. The quartet of normally excellent leads (Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline) drown in sub-standard material.
