Director Joseph Kahn came to talk on Monday after a screening of his ace, underrated gem, DETENTION (2011). Here are 11 things we learned:
1. Said he didn’t behave on TORQUE (2004), his debut. If he did it again, would be more political.
2. Calls himself a working commercial advert director. Was broke after TORQUE – feature film directors don’t make any money.
3. Kahn makes about 20 music videos a year.
4. No studio wanted DETENTION, because so f***ing weird. Spent his own money.
5. Characters in DETENTION know movies, because it makes the film more realistic; so they reference pop culture – SCREAM, etc.
6. Has not seen a dime from the film yet; though is confident that over a long time (more than three decades) he will eventually make money back. The soundtrack alone cost $1.2 million.
7. The most obscure reference in the movie, “Got to fled”, from the little seen FLED (1996).
8. DETENTION took about five years to put together.
9. David Fincher is a massive influence, e.g. Paula Abdul video. Joseph spent a year drawing out each edit of THE SOCIAL NETWORK.
10. The greatest gift, one artist can give another, is to cut out the a**hole.
11. Up next for Kahn: A Smirnoff ad, a 10-minute short film, and is writing a feature film.
