MAD MEN stars Christina Hendricks and John Slattery came on Monday to discuss the latter’s feature film debut, GOD’S POCKET. Six things we learned:
- As soon as Philip Seymour Hoffman and Hendricks were on board, with the script that had everything in it from the source novel by Peter Dexter, the rest of the cast said yes. Slattery asked Hoffman to play journalist Richard Shellburn, but he wanted to play Mickey instead.
- What drew Slattery to the book:
- The precise time
- Contained neighbourhood
- Clearly delineated characters that are different to each other
- Attention to detail is minute
- Preparedness for casual violence to get what you want
- Slattery says the challenge of film is to get the tone that attracted you.
- As an actor learnt when wearing director’s hat to not give a laundry list of notes to cast, as there is too much to have in your head with each scene. Also, Hoffman interestingly didn’t want to know everything before the camera rolls.
- The reference visually was Peter Yates’ FRIENDS OF EDDIE COYLE. Was shot digitally on an Alexa, with old Panasonic lenses, by Lance Acord whose company produced GOD’S POCKET.
- Slattery said Caleb Landry Jones was so effective that they used less of him.
