D: Gus Van Sant (Promised Land, Restless, Milk, Paranoid Park, Last Days, Elephant, Gerry, Finding Forrester, Good Will Hunting, To Die For, My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy, Mala Noche).
S: Joaquin Phoenix, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara, Jack Black, Udo Kier.
Joyous bitter-sweet hippy biopic of cartoonist John Callahan. Gus Van Sant returns to MILK form, though it's not in the same league as AMERICAN SPLENDOR (but then what is?).
THE WEAK ONES (Los débiles) ★★★★☆
Ds: Raúl Rico, Eduardo Giralt Brun.
S: José Luis Lizárraga, Eduardo Martínez, Javier Díaz Dalannais, Javier Chimaldi, Joshua Estrada.
An unusual 65-minute, modern Mexican revenge western, full of characters with wisecracking mouths. A bit of MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME is thrown in too. Directors to watch.
LUZ ★★☆☆☆
D: Tilman Singer.
S: Luana Velis, Jan Bluthardt, Julia Riedler, Nadja Stübiger, Johannes Benecke.
Stylish German horror starts promisingly, but is unscary and becomes silly. Attention-grabbing soundtrack and sound design are wasted on ill thought out story and unconvincing performances.
PIG (Khook) ★★★★½
D: Mani Haghighi (A Dragon Arrives!).
S: Hasan Majuni, Leila Hatami, Leili Rashidi, Parinaz Izadyar, Ali Bagheri.
A filmmaker is blacklisted by the government, while his fellow directors are being murdered by an unknown serial killer. An excellent dark comedy with so many targets in its cross hairs.
