Kaurismäki has honed his wonderful brand of humour and humanism. An endless array of golden touches.

Standard artist doc. Talking heads pedestrian commentary. Structural mess. Intellectually not incisive.
THE MIDWIFE (Sage femme) ★★☆☆☆
D: Martin Provost (Violette, Séraphine).
S: Catherine Frot, Catherine Deneuve, Olivier Gourmet.
Syrupy melodrama. Feels like Deneuve and Frot spend film just talking about men. Not as turgid some of Provost's projects.
