ON THE BEACH AT NIGHT ALONE (Bamui haebyun-eoseo honja) ★★★☆☆
D: Hong Sang-soo (Yourself & Yours, Oki’s Movie, Night & Day, Woman is the Future of Man, The Day a Pig Fell Into the Well).
S: Kim Minhee, Seo Younghwa, Jung Jaeyoung, Moon Sungkeun, Kwon Haehyo, Song Seonmi, Ahn Jaehong, Park Yeaju.
My 20th Sang-soo feature. His most puzzling. There is a lot for the audience to fill in for ourselves, for better/worse.
JOAQUIM ★★★☆☆
D: Marcelo Gomes.
S: Julio Machado, Isabél Zuaa, Nuno Lopes, Rômulo Braga, Welket Bungué, Karay Rya Pua.
Arthouse anti-imperialism/slavery film has a bold ending. Not a particularly efficient use of runtime though.
BERLIN SYNDROME ★★½☆☆
D: Cate Shortland (Lore, Somersault).
S: Teresa Palmer, Max Riemelt.
Feels like a B movie. More À MOI SEULE than ROOM. Psychological insight lacking.
