WATCHMEN [season one] ★★★★★ Something like this comes along so rarely. Only superlatives will suffice. The best first season in television. If this was a film, it would be the best superhero movie. One of the greatest sequels of all time.   6 UNDERGROUND ★★★☆☆ D: Michael Bay (13 Hours, Transformers, Bad Boys II, Armageddon). S: Ryan Reynolds, Mélanie Laurent, Adria Arjona, Corey Hawkins, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Payman Maadi, Dave Franco. Netflix's mega budget action movie, directed by Michael Bay, won’t test your brain cells. However, the opening car chase, lasting 15 minutes, is a standout. It drops the jaw in terms of carnage and violence. The movie will numb you from the pain of the UK election result for the runtime.   The director and star of the underrated THE ACCOUNTANT [2016] reunite. So much of THE IRISHMAN and GEMINI MAN is like watching THE POLAR EXPRESS [2004]. In many areas, de-ageing visual effects still look uncanny. Having said that, younger Samuel L. Jackson in CAPTAIN MARVEL is impressive. (PS - THE IRISHMAN and GEMINI MAN were disappointments from two legendary directors.)  A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBOURHOOD ★★½☆☆ D: Marielle Heller (Can You Ever Forgive Me?, The Diary of a Teenage Girl). S: Tom Hanks, Matthew Rhys, Susan Kelechi Watson, Chris Cooper. Tom Hanks is a solid actor, excelling in PHILADELPHIA [1993]. And now here as well. He is superb as Mr Rogers. The film starts strongly as an entry into emotional intelligence, but the ending is saccharine and unsatisfying.   On this day actor Michael Clarke Duncan was born. His top 5 films: - ARMAGEDDON - KUNG FU PANDA - SIN CITY - TALLADEGA NIGHTS: THE BALLAD OF RICKY BOBBY - THE GREEN MILE  The Green Mile Okay, just when you think you're all super-heroed out, a trailer like this comes along: It is actor Judi Dench’s birthday. Her top 5 films: - ALL IS TRUE - CASINO ROYALE - MRS BROWN - PHILOMENA - SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE  JUMANJI: THE NEXT LEVEL ★★☆☆☆ D: Jake Kasdan (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Bad Teacher, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Orange County). S: Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, Jack Black, Awkwafina, Danny DeVito. A weak excuse for a sequel, even by Hollywood's low bar. There are barely any laughs. The whole thing feels half-arsed. At least there's a decent level of diversity.   |
