“The Force, it’s calling to you. Just let it in.” Surprisingly non-hagiographic documentary on the comedian. 44 films, 11 days (+ pre-fest screenings), at the LFF 2015. My top 7:
THE BOY AND THE BEAST THE DAUGHTER DHEEPAN LAND OF MINE OUR LITTLE SISTER SON OF SAUL TRUMAN STEVE JOBS ★★★½☆ Cop-out ending is a bum note after such a zinging experience. Dialogue sizzles, but Sorkin's propensity for sentimentality grates. GUILTY ★★★★☆ An Indian 'Memories of Murder'. Irrfan Khan as Serpico. RATTLE THE CAGE ★★★½☆ Inventive, and never boring, thriller set effectively in one room. Top notes of Fincher and Carpenter. REMEMBER ★★★☆☆ Atom Egoyan had something here, but didn't delve and darken enough. The director has really been off the boil of late. THE BRAND NEW TESTAMENT ★★★☆☆ Comedy on importance of awareness of own mortality. Not as funny as it thinks it is. Ending fudged. RUINED HEART: ANOTHER LOVE STORY BETWEEN A CRIMINAL AND A WHORE ★★★★☆ Does what Terrence Malick tried to do with KNIGHT OF CUPS. Cinematographer Christopher Doyle is on fire. Tadanobu Asano, so effing cool. RUBEN GUTHRIE ★★★½☆ Many films on addiction are painfully grim: REQUIEM, SHAME, MORE, NEEDLE PARK. Regular levity here provides refreshing tone. |
