Can director Taika Waititi inject some freshness into the Marvel cinema universe? Out to own today: The Other Side of Hope
DUNKIRK ★★★★☆
D: Christopher Nolan (Interstellar, Inception). S: Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Kenneth Branagh, Fionn Whitehead, Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles. A bold, almost experimental narrative structure. Heart-pounding tension. Hans Zimmer's score thrums. With this and Martin Scorsese’s THE IRISHMAN, it looks like Netflix are moving into blockbuster territory. MARJORIE PRIME ★★½☆☆
D: Michael Almereyda (Experimenter, Cymbeline, The Eternal, At Sundance, Another Girl Another Planet). S: Jon Hamm, Geena Davis, Lois Smith, Tim Robbins. Concerned with big topics, but the end result is not compelling. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/marjorie-prime.html BARRAGE ★★☆☆☆
D: Laura Schroeder. S: Lolita Chammah, Thémis Pauwels, Isabelle Huppert, Charles Müller, Elsa Houben, Marja-Leena Juncker, Luc Schiltz. Three generations of mothers-daughters starts promisingly, but then pads out too much of the runtime. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/barrage.html Along with BATTLE OF THE SEXES, 2017 seems to be the year of the tennis movie. |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
