My full review: http://www.filmaluation.com/new-world.html The Berlin Film Festival 2014 opens with the world premiere of Wes Anderson's THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. Trailer: Films and television seen recently:
DRUG WAR ★★★★½ An exciting mixture of MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE and MIAMI VICE and KEKEXILI: MOUNTAIN PATROL. PHILOMENA ★★★★☆ Expert heart-string pulling, backed up by ire boiling under the surface. What a year Steve Coogan is having. FREE BIRDS ★★½☆☆ Bonkers animation. Time travelling turkeys attempting to alter history. Not consistently funny enough. Hirokazu Kore-eda back catalogue. AFTER LIFE. Initial reaction: Plenitude of ideas, not explored enough. Since watched, growing in esteem. PARKS AND RECREATION season two ★★★★★ Joins COMMUNITY and ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, as one of the greats of modern comedy on television. Legendary producer Roger Corman talked about his career on Friday 25th October.
Five things we learned: - Corman had studied industrial engineering, but learned the Stanislavsky acting method to be able to talk to actors. - He sees limitations (budget, time, special effects) as a challenge. Early movies shot in 10 days. - One of Corman's films was partly by shot by him, Francis Ford Coppola, Monte Hellman, Jack Hill and Jack Nicholson. Roger says Nicholson was a talented writer. - He knew of the ALIEN story, but it was not offered to him. - Formed company, New World Pictures, in 1970, interested primarily in contemporary stories. The likes of JAWS and STAR WARS meant he could no longer compete in those genres. Who doesn't enjoy these? Picking holes in blockbusters we love. Captain AmericaCasino RoyaleDirector Hirokazu Kore-eda talked about his career on the 12th October.
Eight things we learned: - A Hollywood remake of LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON is planned at Steven Spielberg's studio. - There were incidents such as in LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON in the 1970s. Kore-eda did research. In a way based on something that actually happened. Almost in 100 percent of cases they chose blood. These days he surmised might not be as many. Blood is thicker than water in Japanese culture. - Working with children, Hirokazu hasn't been giving them scripts for the last 10 years. He tries to improvise them. He whispers the situation. Using their language spoken at the audition, the director adds to the script, e.g. the child who played the son of the electrical repair shop owner only used two phrases, "why" and "oh my god" - so incorporated into the film. - Originally Kore-eda wanted to be a novelist, but decided that university couldn't teach him to be one, so stopped attending. There were lots of cinemas nearby, and went regularly for five years. - Kore-eda has a huge respect for Hsiao-hsien Hou, showing his first film to the director to see what he thought. Hou told him off for the way he filmed it, to not be so prescribed, let the film unfold naturally. - How to make a film is the basis for AFTER LIFE. There were lots of remake offers, but has stalled - no remakes have occurred yet. - Fellini is his biggest influence. - Ken Loach is someone he admires, in particular KES.
