The time travelling turkey flick is out in North America now, and in the UK on the 29th. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/free-birds.html Finished A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE novels so far - about 5000 pages done (3000 more to be published?). Started on its television adaptation, GAME OF THRONES. Treated myself to the season one Blu-ray limited edition - comes with dragon egg. (I don't think there's a dragon in it unfortunately.)
Famed giallo horror director Dario Argento talked about his career on the 7th November.
Seven things we learned: - Without psychiatry horror films don't exist. Argento opines that at the moment South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Japan are making good horror; there is the understanding of fear. - Five generations of his family in the movies. He is the third. Father was friends with Fellini. - Would have been happy staying as a film critic - being paid to watch films. - Lesson learnt from director Sergio Leone: The camera is the master. (Does an amusing impression of the spaghetti western maestro.) - Was in jail for three days. Says a good experience, met different people, no different to college. Maybe for a long time terrible, three days is a good vacation. - Talk turned to SUSPIRIA remake. Dario observes remakes are just for the money. If you want to see the film, put on the DVD. - Is doing an opera of MACBETH in Italy at the moment. Controversial director Catherine Breillat talked about her career on the 15th October.
Nine things we learned: - Catherine loves it when actors in her films hate each other and there's a love scene. The best is when the actors are fighting for her attention. - In order to know to know ourselves we have to recognise ourselves. Breillat couldn't recognise herself in oppressive small town growing up. Went to Paris. Wrote first book at 16, published at 20; which wasn't allowed for under 18s - that's why censorship is so stupid she says. - Catherine's first film was banned for a quarter of a century. - Rocco Siffredi is intelligent she states. He knows the difference between pornography and art, the former there is no acting, no fiction. - Breillat says there's something attractive sexually in something repulsive. Wrote several roles for Eli Wallach, who the director thinks is intelligent and both repulsive and attractive. Has nothing against vulgar men, she loves them. - Going over the same themes over and over again is part of the artist's work. - Is always pushing the bounds of sexuality because is puritanical herself. She's a dandy, like the author in THE LAST MISTRESS. - Catherine never rehearses with actors - just throws them on set and lets them act. - Her scripts are not shot in order, because wants actors to be lost, to not construct character. Can't lose Isabelle Huppert though. The actors say every word as there is musicality to the dialogue Virus thriller FLU is getting released at the cinema next week.
My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/flu.html A Disney movie from the perspective of the villain in SLEEPING BEAUTY. Could be a bold project? Out May 2014. Out to own today: Monsters University“Your hands are as big as my face!” Squishy After two less-than-stellar offerings from the once unassailable Pixar Studios, in the form of CARS 2 and BRAVE, my fingers were firmly crossed, to the point of losing circulation, that their latest project would be a return to form. Not only had they a bit of redeeming to do, the animation powerhouse were taking one of the most beloved from their canon, MONSTERS INC, and expanding the universe in the form of a prequel. Rest easy peeps, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY is a pleasure; and while it doesn’t reach the giddy heights of its predecessor, or the likes of TOY STORY 3, it emerges with a solid 2:1 degree. I didn’t know what I was doing,” former trainer BLACKFISH is a documentary focused on portraying the abuse of orca whales held in captivity to perform in shows, such as SeaWorld. For anyone who bothers to consider the lives of these creatures, the film still offers up some surprises, in particular the extent of how far mistreatment goes. Its vitriol is infectious, and the aim it seems is to rile and encourage seething at the plight of the whales. The magnificent THE GREAT BEAUTY will be screening at the in-house cinema. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/the-great-beauty.html With the London Korean Film Festival in full swing, here are some of my South Korean movie recommends to get your appetite whetted:
The films of Park Chan-wook - Oldboy - JSA: Joint Security Area - Sympathy for Mr Vengeance - Thirst - Lady Vengeance He has his revenge trilogy. They are linked in terms of themes explored rather than characters/stories. They are like a metaphorical meal - starter (Sympathy for Mr Vengeance), main course (Oldboy) and dessert (Lady Vengeance). The films of Kim Jee-woon - I Saw the Devil - The Good, The Bad, The Weird - A Bittersweet LIfe The films of Na Hong-jin - The Chaser - The Yellow Sea The films of Bong Joon-ho - The Host - Memories of Murder - Mother Others: - Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War - Untold Scandal - War of the Arrow - The City of Violence - Woochi: The Demon Slayer - The Man from Nowhere - Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter... and Spring Director Ridley Scott. THE COUNSELLOR purrs seductively in a chassis of sleekness, though drives to an inadequate destination. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/the-counsellor.html |
