ATOMIC BLONDE ★★★★☆
D: David Leitch (John Wick). S: Charlize Theron, James McAvoy, John Goodman, Sofia Boutella, Eddie Marsan, Barbara Sukowa, Toby Jones. What an action movie! Exhilarating stuff. Has the best combat sequence of the year so far. SHIN GODZILLA (Shin Gojira) ★★☆☆☆
Ds: Hideaki Anno (Evangelion 1.0, 2.0, 3.0), Shinji Higuchi (Attack on Titan). S: Hiroki Hasegawa, Yutaka Takenouchi, Satomi Ishihara, Jun Kunimura, Pierre Taki. High on bureaucratic ridicule, low on monster. Whiny about Japan's geopolitical situation without acknowledging historical reasons. Angelina Jolie is a good actor, but not a good director. Will this break her streak? The first one was gleefully O.T.T. Can the sequel top it? Director Ritesh Batra impressed with THE LUNCH BOX, but underwhelmed with THE SENSE OF AN ENDING. His second film of 2017: DETROIT ★★★★☆
D: Kathryn Bigelow (Point Break). S: John Boyega, Will Poulter, Jack Reynor, Hannah Murray, Anthony Mackie. Harrowing depiction of police brutality, murder and racism. 143 forceful, unrelenting minutes. BUSHWICK ★★☆☆☆
Ds: Cary Murnion, Jonathan Millot (Cooties). S: Dave Bautista, Brittany Snow, Angelic Zambrana, Jeremie Harris, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Arturo Castro. This would be a pretty dope action movie, if not for the weird racial stuff going on. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/bushwick.html |
