My Toronto Film Festival stats:
- 37 film festival movies seen - 4 non-fest movies - 11 parties attended The best films from Toronto: ANOMALISA DEMOLITION HARCORE MAGGIE’S PLAN ROOM SPL2: A TIME FOR CONSEQUENCES SPOTLIGHT THE FAMILY FANG WHERE TO INVADE NEXT THE CLASSIFIED FILE ★★★½☆
Police procedural, kidnapping thriller. Corruption and credit-stealing are in its cross hairs. A more spiritual, softer MEMORIES OF MURDER. SEPTEMBERS OF SHIRAZ ★★½☆☆ Gruelling drama. Adrien Brody and Salma Hayek do their best with material lacking in surprises. PHANTOM BOY ★★★☆☆ An animated, fantasy REAR WINDOW, from the makers of A CAT IN PARIS. Simple and funny. VETERAN ★★★★☆ Hilarious cop action movie, with a social justice heart. Hwang Jeong-min is turning into an excellent lead. 11 MINUTES ★★★★☆ Jerzy Skolimowski is roughly the same age as Scorsese, and both are on fire. Dazzling direction, leading to a jaw-dropper. SOUTHBOUND ★★★☆☆ Portmanteau horror that's a cut above the majority, but still inconsistently satisfying. SKY ★★½☆☆ Kruger-Reedus-Dunham-Lellouche in a road trip melodrama. Is quite sweet, but the pseudo-intimacy and character interactions are annoying. ROOM ★★★★½ Gut wrenching. Endlessly claustrophobic. Searing performances. Far superior to COMING HOME (2012). SPOTLIGHT ★★★★☆ Tom McCarthy goes ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, tackling the Catholic Church in Boston. Investigation procedural has narrative propulsion. THE MEDDLER ★★★½☆ A gently moving dramedy on ageing and loneliness. Reminds of Alexander Payne's PARIS, JE T'AIME segment. MR RIGHT ★★★☆☆ Fun screwball action hitman comedy. Sam Rockwell and Anna Kendrick own it. Is no GROSSE POINTE BLANK though. THE DANISH GIRL ★★★☆☆ Romantic and emotional, but suffers from repetition of motifs, character beats and visuals. Last shot is cringe. |
