And with that, my movie watching at #TIFF14 has been completed. 40 films in total. Thank you to the festival - your teams and volunteers are ace. THE CONNECTION ★★★☆☆
Dujardin-Lellouche-Magimel. Slick, but personality-less crime epic. It's no DRUG WAR. BEFORE WE GO ★★★☆☆ Capt America directs 1st film. Evans channels inner Linklater, for BEFORE SUNRISE-esque romance, to solid effect. THE SEARCH ★★★☆☆ An important story, hampered by unrelenting misery and the irritating character played by Bérénice Bejo. TIME OUT OF MIND ★★★½☆ Richard Gere begins Oscar race, as homeless man in NY. Oren Moverman directs as if European arthouse movie. PREGGOLAND ★★★★☆
Arrested development indie comedy. Slacker lady pretends to be pregnant to fit in. Gets tone/humour right. ST. VINCENT ★★★☆☆ A cornball BAD WORDS. Bill Murray plays to his fans, channeling his GROUNDHOG DAY persona. NED RIFLE ★★★½☆ Hal Hartley drops Dutch angles, adds Aubrey Plaza. Saga continues with consistency of tone, but leaner. BREAKUP BUDDIES ★★★☆☆ 2nd Ning Hao of 2014 (NO MAN'S LAND at Berlin). Expert craft, yet diminishes that striking work for crassness. TUSK ★★★☆☆ Director Kevin Smith makes a bonkers, annoyingly loquacious body horror. Johnny Depp saves the film. Susanne Bier's second film of 2014, this time with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper: |
