I’m currently on book three. Will the adaptation match the scope? Will this be just a cacophony of noisy visual effects, or will the film have something interesting to say? From THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT to WILLOW CREEK, cinema forests can have significant menace. Out to own today: Logan
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE [season one] ★★★★½
Builds on excellent source film. Thoughtful, provocative and witty. More television should be this articulate on race relations. Disappointing from the director of BIG NIGHT. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/final-portrait.html The trailer: A dense, intense documentary, on how Russia got away with state sponsored cheating during several Olympic Games. MASTER OF NONE [season 2] ★★★½☆
A few standout episodes, but inconsistent quality. Well directed and ambitious. Not enough of his dad. SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING ★★★½☆
D: Jon Watts. S: Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr, Bokeem Woodbine, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Marisa Tomei. Erases memory of woeful AMAZING SPIDER-MAN films. Close to having something interesting to say about society, but bottles it. THE NIGHT OF ★★★★½
Gripping murder mystery whodunnit mini-series, interrogating the American justice system. No one is superhuman. Everyone is flawed. Deeply upsetting, while reaching for profundity. |
