THE MUMMY [2017] ★★☆☆☆
D: Alex Kurtzman. S: Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Courtney B. Vance, Jake Johnson, Russell Crowe. A sloppy action-horror blockbuster, which is neither exciting nor scary. Am not sure what Tom Cruise is doing in this. Even KNIGHT AND DAY is better. MY COUSIN RACHEL ★★★★☆
D: Roger Michell (Le Week-End, Hyde Park on Hudson, Morning Glory, Venus, Changing Lanes, Notting Hill). S: Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin, Iain Glen, Holliday Grainger. Deft camera angles, depth of field and use of shadows create a stylishly oppressive atmosphere. Rachel Weisz keeps everything off kilter. Director Jeff Orlowski delivered a powerful environmental documentary with CHASING ICE. Am very interested in his latest. The first season had some wild style, but narrative pacing problems. 2017 has had unexpectedly strong start to the horror year. Will this join the trend? MAGNOLIA. COLLATERAL. Tom Cruise not playing a good guy has so far been engrossing. |
