Leigh Whannell’s stomach-clenching THE INVISIBLE MAN [2020] reminds of Steven Soderbergh’s excellent UNSANE [2018]. They are so tense you want them to be over, in a good way.
It is writer Scott Frank’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- GET SHORTY - LOGAN - MINORITY REPORT - OUT OF SIGHT - THE LOOKOUT SPENSER CONFIDENTIAL ★★½☆☆
D: Peter Berg (Mile 22, Patriots Day, Deepwater Horizon, Lone Survivor, Battleship, Hancock, The Kingdom, Friday Night Lights, The Rundown, Very Bad Things). S: Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Bokeem Woodbine, Iliza Shlesinger, Marc Maron. A naff, barely watchable private eye movie. It feels like this subgenre constantly deals with the same conspiracy topic, but I guess it reflects the finite resource in the real world. Peter Berg is a substandard director. It is actor Oscar Isaac’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- CHE - DRIVE - EX MACHINA - INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS - SUBURBICON BACURAU ★★★½☆
Ds: Juliano Dornelles, Kleber Mendonça Filho (Aquarius, Neighbouring Sounds). S: Bárbara Colen, Sônia Braga, Udo Kier, Thomas Aquino, Silvero Pereira, Thardelly Lima. An unpredictable neo-western from Brazil, eschewing the clichés of a town being rescued by strangers. Has biting political allegory. It would have benefitted from the climax being taken off the leash. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/bacurau.html “John Wayne and a tractor have a baby, and all you can is ’nice’?” Directed by Jon Stewart. It is actor Jin-woong Cho’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- A HARD DAY - HWAYI: A MONSTER BOY - KUNDO: AGE OF THE RAMPANT - THE HANDMAIDEN - THE SPY GONE NORTH |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
