UNSANE ★★★★½
D: Steven Soderbergh (Logan Lucky, Behind the Candelabra, Side Effects, Magic Mike, Haywire, Contagion, The Informant!, The Girlfriend Experience, Che: Part Two, Che: Part One, Ocean’s 13, The Good German, Bubble, Ocean’s 12, Solaris, Full Frontal, Ocean’s 11, Traffic, Erin Brockovich, The Limey, Out of Sight, King of the Hill; Sex, Lies, and Videotape). S: Claire Foy, Joshua Leonard, Jay Pharoah, Juno Temple, Polly McKie, Aimee Mullins, Amy Irving. Director Steven Soderbergh's engrossing, brilliantly shot thriller is made on an iPhone, and stars THE CROWN’s Claire Foy. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/unsane.html Mama Cass’s ‘Make Your Own Kind of Music’. I’ll forever associate this song with TV show LOST, and the hatch. Horror movie MARROWBONE seems to have changed its name to THE SECRET OF MARROWBONE in the UK. Here is my review from the Toronto Film Festival: http://www.filmaluation.com/marrowbone.html Out in the USA: 13th April Out in the UK: 13th July The trailer: ANNIHILATION ★★★☆☆
D: Alex Garland (Ex Machina). S: Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tessa Thompson, Gina Rodriguez, Tuva Novotny, Benedict Wong, Oscar Isaac. Casting controversy and messy ending undermine an otherwise gripping female-driven sci-fi horror. The parting shot is pure B-movie. ISLE OF DOGS ★★★★☆
D: Wes Anderson (The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, Fantastic Mr Fox, The Darjeeling Limited, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, Bottle Rocket). S: Bryan Cranston, Koyu Rankin, Edward Norton, Liev Schreiber, Bill Murray, Bob Balaban, Jeff Goldblum, Scarlett Johansson, Kunichi Nomura, Tilda Swinton, Ken Watanabe, Akira Ito, Greta Gerwig, Akira Takayama, Frances McDormand, F. Murray Abraham, Courtney B. Vance, Yojiro Noda, Fisher Stevens, Mari Natsuki, Nijiro Murakami, Yoko Ono, Frank Wood, Harvey Keitel. Witty and stunningly animated. An adventure with a perpetually relevant allegory. Too neat an ending, but a minor quibble. Puts EARLY MAN in the shade. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/isle-of-dogs.html |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
