Out to own today: The Current War
It is actor Owen Wilson’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- ARMAGEDDON - MEET THE PARENTS - MIDNIGHT IN PARIS - SHANGHAI NOON - THE DARJEELING LIMITED KNIVES OUT ★★★½☆
D: Rian Johnson (The Last Jedi, Looper, The Brothers Bloom, Brick). S: Chris Evans, Daniel Craig, LaKeith Stansfield, Ana de Armas, Toni Collette, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Christopher Plummer. An all-star entitlement critique, enveloped in a murder mystery romp. A few chortles and political jabs enhance the experience. Not in the same league as the director's BRICK. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/knives-out.html LA BELLE ÉPOQUE ★★★☆☆
D: Nicolas Bedos. S: Daniel Auteuil, Guillaume Canet, Doria Tillier, Michaël Cohen, Denis Podalydès, Fanny Ardant. Starts bold, so bold I wondered if this was going to be a French WESTWORLD. Alas, it merely becomes a conventional rom-com. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/la-belle-epoque.html I LOST MY BODY ★★★½☆
D: Jérémy Clapin. S: Hakim Faris, Victoire Du Bois, Patrick d'Assumçao. Netflix’s contender for best animated film of the year. Imaginative, exciting, tragic. A story filled with pain. Bleak, yet tries to offer hope (to mixed success). My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/i-lost-my-body.html Most origin stories are rubbish, undermining the mystery of characters. Was anyone yearning for a Scooby-Doo one? (Not that there’s much to undermine with this franchise.) I only like two Terrence Malick films: THE THIN RED LINE and THE NEW WORLD.
