When you think of quality modern family dramedies, what springs to mind?
BOOMERANG FAMILY joins them. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/boomerang-family.html The score for GAME OF THRONES is a bit medieval-trite, but Ramin Djawadi's opening credits theme is pretty fab. Forget the generic title, FIST OF LEGEND (2013) is amazeballs.
My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/fist-of-legend.html FROZEN is down there with the flawed BRAVE. The two films are no TANGLED.
Out in North America/UK on the 27th November/6th December. My take on it: http://www.filmaluation.com/frozen.html At the closing night gala of the London Korean Film Festival 2013 on Friday, Actors Youn Yuh-jung and Yoon Je-moon, and director Song Hae-sung, introduced their movie, BOOMERANG FAMILY.
A Nos Amours seems like a pretty cool film club to us.
Here is their site: http://www.anosamours.co.uk We were sent this press release about the next screening taking place at the ICA on Thursday 28th November at 7pm: A Nos Amours continues a retrospective of the complete film works of Chantal Akerman, with two short films and her breakthrough feature length film of 1972 Je Tu Il Elle. Chantal Akerman's work is superficially wide-ranging - documentary and narrative, film and video, 16mm and 35mm, cinema and gallery - and yet her work is characterised by an uncompromising and singular sense of purpose. What Akerman shows us, by means structural and otherwise, is nothing less than the human condition, a series of astonishing mediations on loneliness and anxiety, alienation and discomfort. She began inspired by Godard, but quickly established a startling and provocative project that is among the very greatest in European film. As J. Hoberman has said: "Comparable in force and originality to Godard or Fassbinder, Chantal Akerman is arguably the most important European director of her generation". La Chambre (1972, 16mm, 11', mute) Shot in New York, influenced perhaps by Michael Snow and Andy Warhol: serene, formal, and yet very beautiful. A short film consisting entirely of shots of the interior of a small apartment. Le 15/8 (1973, 16mm, 42') Returning to Europe from New York, working with a Finnish friend of Akerman's early collaborator Samy Szlingerbaum, Akerman explores a hinterland between documentary, fiction and unmediated duration. The film takes place over a day and follows the thoughts of a young Finnish woman in a Parisian apartment. Je Tu il Elle (16mm, 1975, 86') A set of minimalist constraints create a space for a devastating exploration of utter dissociation. Akerman’s first feature film, starring Akerman herself, documents a young woman’s road trip and love affairs. Director Darren Aronofsky (BLACK SWAN, REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) has made an epic. Out March 2014. The trailer: Director Kang Woo Suk and actor Yoon Je-moon introducing their film on Thursday.
FIST OF LEGEND (2013) ★★★★★ Wow! Witty, exciting, intelligent sports movie. Lost count of the number of action sequences. Legend. Zombie auteur George A. Romero talked about his career on the 8th November.
Nine things we learned: - The point of doing a horror story is to upset the apple cart. - Was driving to New York with the first print of NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD when he heard on the radio that Martin Luther King has been assassinated. - Romero could have shot NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD in 16mm and colour, but chose 35mm and black & white - more evocative. The film cost $115,000, and made $700,000 in its first year. NIGHT is about the disintegration of the family unit. - His take on zombies, he calls "my guys", are the recently dead, not strong enough to dig themselves out of the grave. They don't eat brains because can't get through the skull. - MARTIN is the favourite of his films; KNIGHTRIDERS the most personal - is about bucking the system, sticking to your guns. - Romero wouldn't be on the stage right now if not for Dario Argento (who is in the audience). Had an idea for DAWN OF THE DEAD. Invited by Argento, went to Rome, Finished the script there. - DAWN OF THE DEAD remake has taken title but not concept - commentary on consumerism. Not a fan of THE CRAZIES remake. Says hard when purpose of original and remake is wholly at odds, even though well crafted. - Is working right now with Marvel on comic: EMPIRE OF THE DEAD - vampires and zombies fighting over food source. - Only has one or two films left in him he think. |
