THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA [mini-series] ★★★★☆
A parallel universe in the vein of FATHERLAND and THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE. What if America hadn’t joined the Second World War? Comparisons to the modern world are inevitable. Adapted by the creators of THE WIRE. Six episodes of having your guts squeezed. TWO WEEKS TO LIVE [season one] ★★★½☆
A fun, breezy action-comedy that the Brits are starting to do really well. (See also THE WRONG MANS.) Each performance emanates charisma and/or personality. Though the show’s use of cliffhangers is a little eye-rolling. PROJECT POWER ★★☆☆☆
Ds: Henry Joost, Ariel Schulman (Nerve, Paranormal Activity 3, Catfish). S: Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dominique Fishback, Rodrigo Santoro, Courtney B. Vance, Amy Landecker, Machine Gun Kelly. A random superhero flick. The diversity is the only good thing going on here. However, the lead, an African-American teenager, is a drug dealer who dreams of being a rapper. Such characterisation needs to be retired. Plus, the movie wastes actors Jamie Foxx and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. THE DEVIL ALL THE TIME ★★★★☆
D: Antonio Campos (Christine, Simon Killer, Afterschool). S: Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill Skarsgård, Haley Bennett, Sebastian Stan, Jason Clarke, Riley Keogh, Mia Wasikowska. A serial killer thriller masquerading as a drama. So much death. Robert Pattinson’s sexual predator preacher is skin crawling. This film reminds of South Korean crime flick, I SAW THE DEVIL [2010]. |
