It is director Hong Sang-soo’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- NIGHT AND DAY - OKI’S MOVIE - THE DAY A PIG FELL INTO THE WELL - WOMAN IS THE FUTURE OF MAN - YOURSELF AND YOURS The original MISS BALA (2011) was excellent. Will the Hollywood remake hold a candle to it? It has been a long time waiting for director Joe Cornish’s follow-up to ATTACK THE BLOCK. It is director Ang Lee’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON - EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN - HULK - LIFE OF PI - RIDE WITH THE DEVIL THE NIGHT COMES FOR US ★★★★½
D: Timo Tjahjanto (May the Devil Take You, Headshot, Killers). S: Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, Julie Estelle, Sunny Pang. Bar a couple of scenes where henchmen seem to be waiting their turn to have the sh*t kicked out of them, the fight sequences are phenomenal. Out to own today: The Bookshop
My top 5 favourite films from the London Film Festival 2018:
- DESTROYER - NON-FICTION - SHADOW - WIDOWS - WOMAN AT WAR The best film of the festival: IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK STAN & OLLIE ★★★☆☆
D: Jon S. Baird (Filth). S: John C. Reilly, Steve Coogan, Nina Arianda, Shirley Henderson. The melancholic swansong of blockbuster entertainment careers is complimented by spurts of sharp banter. Bar the occasional flourish, this feels like a TV movie of the week. The make up on John C. Reilly is distracting. MARI ★★★☆☆ D: Georgia Parris. S: Bobbi Jene Smith, Phoebe Nicholls, Madeleine Worrall. A family melodrama, which at times feels skilfully economic and at others clumsily forced. The refreshing move was to incorporate Bobbi Jene Smith's dancing. Georgia Parris is a director to watch. It is actor Ken Watanabe’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- INCEPTION - ISLE OF DOGS - LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA - TAMPOPO - UNFORGIVEN [2013] A PRIVATE WAR ★★★½☆
D: Matthew Heineman (City of Ghosts). S: Rosamund Pike, Jamie Dornan, Stanley Tucci, Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Tom Hollander. Rosamund Pike impresses as war correspondent Marie Colvin, though the direction and editing do not match the power of her performance. The film is a deeply affecting recognition of journalistic bravery, empathy, and conviction. CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME? ★★★★☆ D: Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl). S: Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells, Jane Curtin. Literary forgery shenanigans and loneliness. Melissa McCarthy and Richard E. Grant, playing to their strengths, are an engagingly unruly double act. |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
