MERANTAU (2009) showed promise. While I absolutely love THE RAID (2011) and THE RAID 2 (2014). I am so in for director Gareth Evans’ latest. Compellingly restless, in your face camerawork reflects the character of Alba Rohrwacher. The heightened melodrama is handled skilfully. Out to own today: On Chesil Beach
THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS ★★½☆☆
D: Eli Roth (Death Wish, Knock Knock, The Green Inferno, Hostel: Part II, Hostel, Cabin Fever). S: Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Lorenza Izzo, Owen Vaccaro, Colleen Camp, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Kyle MacLachlan. Only engaging for adults when Jack Black and Cate Blanchett are on the screen (which is not enough). The first kids film from the director of the ultra-violent HOSTEL. Seven movies in and Eli Roth still has not made a good one. THE PREDATOR ★★★☆☆
D: Shane Black (The Nice Guys, Iron Man 3, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang). S: Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Jacob Tremblay, Thomas Jane, Yvonne Strahovski, Jake Busey, Alfie Allen, Sterling K. Brown. The fourth film in an enjoyable franchise (discounting the dire ‘AvP’ flicks) has the most jokes of the series, though is the least well crafted. It feels rushed, sloppy and forgettable, but has a sporadically fun impudence. I am unimpressed by all four of the films directed by Shane Black, but I really rate some of the movies he is involved with as a writer: LETHAL WEAPON, THE LAST BOY SCOUT and LAST ACTION HERO. It is actor Sam Neill’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- EVENT HORIZON - HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE - SWEET COUNTRY - THE DAUGHTER - THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER MUSEO ★★★★☆
D: Alonso Ruizpalacios. S: Gael García Bernal, Leonardo Ortizgris, Alfredo Castro, Simon Russell Beale, Bernardo Velasco, Leticia Brédice, Ilse Salas, Lisa Owen. Starring Gael García Bernal, a different kind of heist movie. Whizz-bang energy filled with panache, and anger at colonial theft. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/museo.html ‘Harry Potter’ movies ranked, worst ➡️ best:
DEATHLY HALLOWS part 1 ⬇️ CHAMBER OF SECRETS ⬇️ PHILOSOPHER'S STONE ⬇️ ORDER OF THE PHOENIX ⬇️ HALF-BLOOD PRINCE ⬇️ GOBLET OF FIRE ⬇️ DEATHLY HALLOWS part 2 ⬇️ PRISONER OF AZKABAN |
