Mike Flanagan is an accomplished horror director (ABSENTIA, OCULUS, GERALD’S GAME). However, can his sequel to Stanley Kubrick’s THE SHINING [1980] live up to the original? It is actor Stellan Skarsgård’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- BREAKING THE WAVES - IN ORDER OF DISAPPEARANCE - RONIN - THE AVENGERS - THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER KILLING EVE [season two] ★★★★½
Addictive television. Villanelle is a character for the ages: Part Hannibal Lecter, part Meryl Streep. The lead duo are charisma personified. It could do with a bit more action. I want to see Villanelle go John Wick. CHERNOBYL [miniseries] ★★★★½
A mesmerising dissection of the 1986 nuclear power plant disaster. The show is agonising on many levels. The way the series juggles detail, characterisation, and context, is a masterclass. The last instalment was surprisingly decent, especially compared to the inadequate Expendable movies. It is actor Bill Hader’s birthday. His top 5 films:
- INSIDE OUT - MAGGIE’S PLAN - PAUL - THE SKELETON TWINS - THEY CAME TOGETHER THE BRINK [documentary] ★★★★☆
D: Alison Klayman (The 100 Years Show, Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry). A scathing, skin-crawling documentary on Steve Bannon. A depressing, gut-punch, giving insight into how he organises the far-right. A glimmer of hope comes at the end, with the arrival of the likes of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez into politics. A shame this was not released in the UK before the EU elections. |
