TRIPLE FRONTIER ★★★☆☆
D: J.C. Chandor (A Most Violent Year, All is Lost, Margin Call). S: Ben Affleck, Oscar Isaac, Charlie Hunnam, Pedro Pascal, Adria Arjona, Sheila Vand, Garrett Hedlund. A heist movie set in the world of the war on drugs. Not in the same league as THREE KINGS [1999] or DEAD PRESIDENTS [1995], as the potential for social/political commentary is squandered. Exciting, but not particularly distinctive. REVENGER ★★★☆☆
D: Seung-Won Lee. S: Bruce Khan, Hee-soon Park, Jin-Seo Yoon. A film all about fights. No characterisation. Derivative story (bits of ESCAPE FROM YORK, BATTLE ROYALE, etc.). Just fights. At least the fisticuffs are exciting. BIRDS OF PASSAGE ★★★★½
Ds: Cristina Gallego, Ciro Guerra (Embrace of the Serpent). S: Natalia Reyes, José Acosta, Carmiña Martínez, José Vicente Cotes, Jhon Narváez. An epic cautionary tale set over decades. A gripping thriller about the involvement of indigenous clans in the Columbian drug trade. The attention to detail mesmerises, as we watch in horror as culture is eviscerated in the wake of greed. |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
