So many television to film adaptations have foundered. I am quietly hopeful for BAYWATCH. THE OTHER SIDE OF HOPE (Toivon tuolla puolen) ★★★★½
D: Aki Kaurismäki (Le Havre, Lights in the Dusk, The Man Without a Past, Leningrad Cowboys Go America). S: Sakari Kuosmanen, Sherwan Haji, Niroz Haji, Simon Hussein Al-Bazoon, Kaija Pakarinen. Kaurismäki has honed his wonderful brand of humour and humanism. An endless array of golden touches. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/the-other-side-of-hope.html Out to own today: Bleed for This
The Edge of Seventeen
DJANGO ★½☆☆☆
D: Etienne Comar. S: Reda Kateb, Cécile De France, Maximilien Poullein, Ulrich Brandhoff. Turgid, pedestrian music biopic. Lacks insight and context. Calling lead a genius is not enough, show us why. Is no AMADEUS. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/django.html Visually, this looks uninspired; though, that may not end up being its biggest flaw. WILD MOUSE (Wilde Maus) ★★★★☆
D: Josef Hader. S: Josef Hader, Pia Hierzegger, Georg Friedrich, Jörg Hartmann, Crina Semciuc, Nora von Waldstätten, Denis Moschitto. KLOWN, TONI ERDMANN, MY GREAT NIGHT, European comedies have been knocking it out of the park lately. WILD MOUSE joins them. My review: http://www.filmaluation.com/wild-mouse.html THE LOST CITY OF Z ★★★½☆
D: James Gray (The Immigrant, Two Lovers, We Own The Night, The Yards). S: Charlie Hunnam, Sienna Miller, Robert Pattinson, Tom Holland. A leap forward for director James Gray. Still not completely satisfying, but reminds of the mournful GREYSTOKE: THE LEGEND OF TARZAN. |

Noun, “filmaluation”: The evaluation of a film Verb, "to filmaluate”: To evaluate a film I am well aware how difficult it is to make a film, put on a stage play, create a television show, write a novel, let alone make something of note.
