A MAN’S FLOWER ROAD (1986) ★★★☆☆ Sion Sono's feature debut digitised. Hyperactive, chaotic, tiresome, funny. FUKUSHIMA, MON AMOUR ★★★½☆ Doris Dörrie continues the theme of CHERRY BLOSSOMS, of German-Japanese friendship providing a melancholicly uplifting balm. TRIVIṢA ★★½☆☆ Produced by Johnnie To. Three directors: Frank Hui, Vicky Wong, Jevons Au working seamlessly. But far too convoluted. WAR ON EVERYONE ★★★★☆ Hilarious, but not in same league as John Michael McDonagh's previous, CALVARY. Michael Peña and Alexander Skarsgård are comedy gold. WE ARE THE TIDE ★★☆☆☆ Like INTERSTELLAR, looks and sounds the business; but also the story is nonsense and the dialogue cringe. A school friend of mine is a director of THE LOVERS AND THE DESPOT, and therefore I won't review it; suffice to see it is an entertaining and moving documentary. At the ALONE IN BERLIN press conference: Brendan Gleeson, Emma Thompson, Vincent Perez, Daniel Brühl and Mikael Persbrandt.
UNITED STATES OF LOVE ★★★☆☆ Ticks off indie staples, not originally enough: -Overlapping narrative timelines, -Square on camera, -Tracking shots behind head. SAINT AMOUR ★★★★★ Directors Benoît Delépine & Gustave Kervern are comedy legends. Gérard Depardieu, Benoît Poelvoorde, Vincent Lacoste all on form. A DRAGON ARRIVES! ★☆☆☆☆ Starts as a cross between THE WICKER MAN and ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA, and then quickly loses any coherence. |
